{"id":59812707,"date":"2011-07-06T03:19:00","date_gmt":"2011-07-06T03:19:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/howlucky.posterous.com\/my-review-of-the-far-country-and-the-man-from"},"modified":"2014-05-01T03:06:33","modified_gmt":"2014-05-01T03:06:33","slug":"my-review-of-the-far-country-and-the-man-from","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/globadom.com\/howlucky\/2011\/07\/06\/my-review-of-the-far-country-and-the-man-from\/","title":{"rendered":"My Review of The Far Country and The Man from Laramie"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On June 30th, my husband and I went to a double bill of <a title=\"The Far Country\" href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0048055\/?ref_=nv_sr_1\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Far Country <\/em><\/a>and <a title=\"The Man From Laramie\" href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0048342\/?ref_=nv_sr_1\" target=\"_blank\"><em>The Man From Laramie <\/em><\/a>at the<a title=\"Pacific Cinematheque\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cinematheque.bc.ca\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Pacific\u00a0Cin\u00e9math\u00e8que<\/a>. \u00a0Before I present my review of the films, I&#8217;d like to pay a brief homage to the cinema itself.<\/p>\n<div>The Pacific\u00a0Cin\u00e9math\u00e8que\u00a0has been our go-to cinema for classic and foreign films for decades. \u00a0It was there we first saw Alfred Hitchcock&#8217;s <a title=\"Lifeboat\" href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0037017\/?ref_=fn_al_tt_1\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Lifeboat<\/em><\/a>, David Lean&#8217;s <a title=\"Oliver Twist\" href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0040662\/?ref_=nv_sr_2\" target=\"_blank\"><em>Oliver Twist<\/em><\/a>, Federico Fellini&#8217;s <a title=\"La Dolce Vita\" href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0053779\/?ref_=nv_sr_1\" target=\"_blank\"><em>La Dolce Vita<\/em><\/a>, and many other unforgettable movies. \u00a0Long before we got <a title=\"Turner Classic Movies\" href=\"http:\/\/www.tcm.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Turner Classic Movies<\/a>, the\u00a0Cin\u00e9math\u00e8que\u00a0was where we went for something other than the summer blockbusters. \u00a0Soon, the\u00a0Cin\u00e9math\u00e8que will be relocating and becoming part of the\u00a0TELUS garden development in downtown Vancouver. \u00a0Next year will also be its 40th anniversary, so I strongly recommend checking it out and enjoying a truly memorable moviegoing experience.<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div><em>The Far Country\u00a0<\/em>and\u00a0<em>The Man From Laramie <\/em>were two Anthony Mann westerns from the 1950s starring Jimmy Stewart. \u00a0The former depicts Stewart as a nomadic, self-reliant man in the late 19th century. \u00a0He makes his money driving a herd of cattle from the United States to Canada and then taking his profits to stake a claim during the gold rush. \u00a0The latter shows a highly ethical, yet vengeful Stewart on a quest to find the man responsible for selling repeating rifles to the American Indians.<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div>It was fantastic to see these two films back to back, as the range of Stewart&#8217;s talent is clearly evident. \u00a0Stewart is often thought of as playing himself in every movie, but I strongly dispute that claim. \u00a0It is hard to believe that the same man embodies both these characters, as one is easy to dislike and the other evokes sympathy even as he exacts his revenge. \u00a0<em>The Man from Laramie<\/em>\u00a0is by far the better movie, though. \u00a0The complexity of the story and the supporting characters outweigh the rather thin plot of <em>The Far Country<\/em>. \u00a0Yet, this gold rush odyssey is still worth watching for its strong female characters and the beautiful scenery of Jasper, Alberta, where the movie was filmed.<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div>All in all, I very much enjoyed my sixth prize and am looking forward to win number seven!
