Lucien Van Impe is to join the Mr. Bookmaker squad as Assistant Director. He will assume his new position officially January 1, 2005 but will be assisting with the team management from now until the end of the season having followed stage 2 of the Circuit Franco-Belge today (Friday) in the team car. Van Impe, the last Belgian winner of the prestigeous TourFrance, currently has no sportsdirector's license and in view of the time of year will not be taking one out for the few remaining weeks of the 2004 season. At 33 years of age, Catherine Marsal has decided to pursue other career possibilities. Constantino Zaballa (Spain, Saunier Duval) soloed home to win the 19th stage, Avila - Collado Villalba (150 km). Roberto Heras (Liberty Seguros) Still leads the Overall Classification. Breaking away solo with 110 km. left to ride, Zaballa finishes a comfortable 1 minute and 22 seconds ahead of a 15 man chase group. There were no challengers for overall victory in the chase group and the main contenders for overall honours finished in the peloton 6 minutes and 20 seconds in arrears. 26 riders were subjected to blood tests before the start of today´s stage. All those tested were declared as fit to continue in the race. The tests were carried out between 07.45 and 08.25 on cyclists from the Fassa Bortolo, Illes Balears-Banesto, Cofidis, Alessio-Bianchi and Liberty Seguros squads. Olympic time trial champion Tyler Hamilton has been cleared of any doping offence at the Athens Games by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). As predicted by most Cycling journalists, at Richard Virenque's Paris Press Conference today he announced his retirement. Virenque was cleared of charges that he helped supply drugs to his teammates afer the 1998 TourFrance - Festina scandal but caused a furore with his testimony which claimed there was systematic drug abuse within his Festina team and the sport of cycling. Soon forgiven for his peccadillos, Richard Virenque was a Hero to the French fans and repaid them handsomely this year by winning the TourFrance's longest stage on 14 July, Bastille Day, with another of his trademak solo breakaways.
