La Longo - Out to Avenge Athens
Mon Sep 27 18:37:54 2004
After a mediocre showing in the Athens Olympic Time Trial, Jeannie Longo has been training at altitude around Saint-Véran in the French Hautes-Alpes department. The Worlds Time Trial course for the Tuesday Championship, 24.05 km. around Bardolino, Italy was given a tentative approval approval by the French Champion. ``There is some climbing, but is not the best course for me,'' said Longo when she arrived in Bardolino Sunday. At 46 years of age Longo has not had much success at the World Championships in recent years. She last won the Time Trial in 2001 in Lisbon, but will be out to set the record straight in Bardolino. She is also slated to contest the Road Race in Verona too. (Source: L'Equipe)L'Equipe (French)

Pro Tour:
The battle to save Cycling from Verbruggen is on.
Mon Sep 27 12:58:30 2004
The organizers of the three Summer Super Races, the tours respectively of Italy, France and Spain, are reported to be united in their rejection of the inclusion of their Tour in the 2005 Pro Tour schedule that the UCI has published. The Pro Tour is a new series founded on old established pre existing races and is open to only 18 elite teams pre-qualified (approved) by the UCI. The Pro Tour series has received nothing but negative feedback from sponsors, organizers and fans and is calculated by its many detractors to be the end of professional cycling in Europe as it has been known for over a century. Angelo Zomegnan (RCS, Giro organizer), Patrice Clerc (ASO, Tour de France) and Eduardo Franco (Unipublic, Vuelta) met today (Monday) in Madrid, to discuss their position whilst the UCI chief, Hein Verbruggen, struts around Bardolino where the World Time Trial Championships are currently being held as though everything in the Cycling Garden is Rosy. ``The Pro Tour will go ahead in 2005 with or without the Tour de France,'' said Verbruggen last Saturday and he presumably included the Tours of Italy and Spain along with Cycling's Flagship Tour de France. In face of so much opposition, one has to wonder why the UCI, since it is doubtful that Verbruggen made the decision alone, would persevere with a series that nobody wants. Several theories have been aired over the last few months. One is that big money is ``Calling the tune'' by virtue of having ``Paid the Piper.'' Another is that there is a power struggle going on behind the scenes that the average Cycling Fan is unaware of and that the Pro Tour is a desperate attempt to maintain the Reins of Power in the hands of the UCI. Whatever the reason for Verbruggen's obstinacy in the face of almost total opposition to his creation one thing is certain; Should the Pro Tour actually get off the ground, cycle racing as we have know and loved it will be dead.
