Worlds 2005: Nine man maximum squads

The next Worlds Championship will be disputed by national teams with a maximum of nine riders.

The reduction from 12 to 9 riders is to allow more National Squads to compete.

The World Champion will still be an automatic over-riding selection, meaning in effect, that Spain,
whose Oscar Freire is currently World Champion, will be allowed 10 riders.

UCI awards last three spots on Pro Tour

The last three organizations to be invited to the new ProTour commencing in 2005 by the UCI are:
SA Vendee Cyclisme (France), Ciclosport Srl (Italy) e Bici Club Azzurro Srl (Italy). 

SA Vendee Cyclisme (France) runs the Brioches La Boulangère team which will become Bouygues Télécom
for the 2005 season.

Ciclosport is the license holder for Gianluigi Stanga's Domina Vacanze squad and 
Bici Club Azzurro will oversee the merged Lampre-Saeco team.

There are now 20 teams slated to compete in the controversial Pro Tour schedule of events,
an increase of two from the originally proposed 18 squads.

Paolo Lanfranchi retiring

Paolo Lanfranchi, professional since 1993, with nine victories to his credit is retiring.

Lanfranchi is 36 years old and currently riding for the Ceramiche Panaria-Margres squad.

Domina Vacanze on Vacation?

MILAN: Blue Sea Services (which manages Mario Cipollini's Domina Vacanze squad) has given 
instructions to its lawyers to commence legal action against Domina Vacanze, the prime sponsor 
of the squad bearing their name.

It seems that amongst other grievances the Blue Sea Services organization has, they have not
been paid since June of this year.

Tom Boonen: Paris-Tours Doubtful

Not yet fully recovered from a bout of Gastroenteritis, Belgium's speedmerchant, a prolific
winner this season, Tom Boonen's Doctor has told him to rest for a few days.

Tom's mother, Agnes concurs, making his participation in next Sunday's penultimate World Cup
event, the 98th. running of Paris-Tours, doubtful.

Giro 2005 - Prologue to be a Power Trip

The 88th. edition of the Giro d'Italia will run from May 7 - May 29, 2005.

Starting in Regio Calabria there will be the traditional Prologue to determine who will
wear the Maglia Rosa, or Pink Leader's jersey on Stage One.

The prologue results might be interesting though. Designed for the Powerhouses of the 
Peloton, it will be over a mere distance  of 1.2 kilometers.
