Traditional Italian Season Closers
Posted Tue Oct 12 12:55:01 2004 (EDT in North America)

It's easy to tell when the Italian road racing season is ending because along comes
``il trittico rosa'''', the three races which, excepting the lesser ranked Firenze-Pistoia,
close the book for the year.

The first is tomorrow's Milano-Torino, the oldest race on any calendar having been first run
in 1876, which starts in the Novate Milanese and finishes 199 kilometers later in the
Motovelodromo Fausto Coppi. Ivan Basso and Damiano Cunego are slated to be on the start line
along with Bartoli, Frigo, Scarponi, Sella and Pellizotti from the Italian peloton and Dekker,
the Paris-Tours winner, Vinoukurov, Popovych, Boogerd and Astarloa heading up the International
Brigade.

Thursday comes the 91st edition of the Giro del Piemonte: starting in Alba (10.50 local time),
and crossing the finish line after 190 kilometers of hard racing.

Then Saturday comes the final leg of the World Cup, the Giro di Lombardia, starting this year
in Switzerland for the first time, with the main climbs of Ghisallo, Civiglio and San Fermo della
Battaglia, coming in the final 60 kilometers.

The gloves will be off in this year's Lombardia as Bettini-Rebellin battle for overall victory in
the World Cup.
