Spanish rider Aitor Gonzalez signed yesterday (Thursday) to ride for Euskaltel-Euskadi, his former Basque (Spain) squad, for a one year term. Gonzalez, 29 years old and Tour of Spain winner in 2002, rode for the last two seasons for the Italian Fassa Bartolo team. Four Irish riders today began the Malaysia Airlines Herald Sun Tour in Victoria, Australia, riding as part of the Sungold Milk-Warrnambool team. Paul Healion and Brian Kenneally were best placed of the quartet, finishing in the main bunch in 63rd and 78th place respectively. Their team-mates Dermot Nally and Philip Finegan lost over four minutes, crossing the line at the rear of the field. The criterium in Melbourne was won by Bicycle Superstore rider Karl Menzies, who went clear with the English rider Dean Downing (Bendigo) and his own Australian team-mate David McKenzie early on in the 30 lap, 33 kilometre street race. They shared out the 11 intermediate sprints between them. Menzies now leads ahead of McKenzie and Downing, with the remainder of the field over one and a half minutes behind. Kenneally and Healion are both 1 minute and 51 seconds down, while Finegan and Nally are now 4 minutes and 47 seconds back. The eleven-day race continues tomorrow with another criterium, held over 36 kilometres in Werribee. The Basque squad Euskaltel-Euskadi is in search of a new team doctor. Jesus Losa was recently dismissed because he had provided EPO to David Millar. Reeling from the non inclusion of the clothing manufacturing sponsored Spanish team, Kelme, in the new UCI 2005 Pro Tour and recently deserted by the team's star rider, Alejandro Valverde, who will move to Illes Balears, the Kelme sponsor has indicated that it will nevertheless remain as a sponsor for the 2005 season as co-sponsor with the Valencia government. A stage of the Giro d'Italia will honour the memory of Fabio Casartelli with Albese con Cassano, Casartelli's home ground, being designated as a staging town in the 2005 Giro. The Tour de France will also commemorate him with a special prize for the winner of the Portet d'Aspet stage, the stage on which Fabio tragically lost his life in a crash during the 1995 Tour. Paris-Tours: Museeuw's last Race

Last Sunday, two days after receiving a four year suspension for doping, Belgium's recently retired former World Champion and prolific Classics Winner, Johan Museeuw was commentating at the Paris-Tours World Cup race for VRT (Belgian National Flemish Television Network). But the Flandrian Media Minister was not amused. The upshot? Museeuw will not be allowed to broadcast for VRT for the duration of his suspension. Luckily for Museeuw, two years of the suspension by the LRVB (Belgium's Cycling governing body) were retroactive, effectively making the suspension one of only two years for practical purposes. Australian Allan Davis (Liberty Seguros) won the 91st. edition of the Giro del Piemonte today, run over 190 kilometers. In the sprint he bested Italians Alberto Ongarato ans Francesco Chicchi. 24 years old, Davis racked up his fifth win of the season today including two stages of the Tour de Majorca, and his 10th win since he turned professional in 2002. The stage was enlivened by a Lotto-Domo Belgian duo, Thierry Marichal and Gorik Gardeyn, who went away at kilometer six and pushed their advantage to a maximum of 9 minutes before being gradually hauled back.
