The Spanish Îles Baléares squad which recently signed Alejandro Valverde is said to be losing three riders at the end of the current 2004 season. Russian Denis Menchov, Germany's Steffen Radochla and Spaniard Jose Antonio Lopez Gil are all rumoured to be leaving. We'll know more next weekend,'' said Jose Miguel Echavarri, the Îles Baléares manager at today's Giro di Lombardia, the final race in the current World Cup Series. Valverde is said to be bringing two riders with him from Kelme, his current team, to support him and nominal team leader Francisco Mancebo. Menchov, winner of this year's Tour du Pays Basque and a stage of the Vuelta à España, is going to the Dutch Rabobank squad. (Source: L'Equipe)L'Equipe (French)

Bettini clinches World Cup
Posted Sat Oct 16 16:36:09 2004 (EDT in North America)
Paolo Bettini won the 2004 World Cup by finishing ahead of rivalBBC Site - (English)
David Rebellin in the Tour of Lombardy. Bettini and Rebellin both finished out of the leading placings in the Tour of Lombardy, the last of the 10 World Cup races. Italian Damiano Cunego, the winner of May's Giro d'Italia, beat Michael Boogerd of the Netherlands and fellow Italian Ivan Basso in a sprint finish. Olympic champion Bettini, of Italy, finished 28th, one spot behind Rebellin, to clinch the overall title. The annual 10-race competition, launched in 1989, will be replaced by a new 30-race Pro Tour beginning in 2005. Bettini, who rides for the Quick Step team, was the only cyclist to win the World Cup three times. He captured the prestigious trophy this year without scoring a single victory, capitalizing on a number of top-three placings. (Source: BBC)

Pro Tour: Full Speed Ahead
Posted Sat Oct 16 09:15:25 2004 (EDT in North America)
Despite there having been some signs of reconciliation recently with the organizers of the three major summer Tours, the Giro d'Italia, Tour de France and Vuelta à España, no agreement has been reached over the inclusion or otherwise of the three Flagship events in the controversial new Pro Tour slated to start in 2005. Hein Verbruggen, the UCI president, however, like the captain of the Titanic, is determined that his Pro Tour, predicted by many to be the death of bicycle racing as it has been known in the European bicycle racing heartland for over 100 years, will be going Full Speed Ahead, with or without the three Grand Tours.
