Triple Olympic medallist Bradley Wiggins will make his first major track appearance in Britain since Athens at the Manchester Velodrome on 23 October. Wiggins, who won gold, silver and bronze at the Games in August, revealed this week he will compete at the Revolution 5 event. Fellow Olympic gold medallist Chris Hoy has already committed to taking part. And Rob Hayles, with whom Wiggins won bronze in Greece, is among a raft of other top Britons set to compete. Downing leads Sun Tour after Stage 4 British rider Dean Downing took the overall lead in Victoria's Herald-Sun tour on Saturday after Robert McLachlan won the fourth stage. McLachlan was first across the line after being among a 12-strong group which broke away early in the 117-kilometre kermesse stage. Former Tour de France green jersey Baden Cooke was second, with Richard England third. Downing (fifth on the day) moved to the top of the general classification at the expense of Tasmanian Karl Menzies (seventh). Meanwhile Victorian Cadel Evans finished fourth in the 246km Tour of Lombardy, the final race of the 2004 World Cup series, in Italy overnight. Olympic road race champion Paolo Bettini added a third World Cup title to his 2004 collection of titles after finishing the series with a small points margin over second-placed Davide Rebellin. Bettini managed to keep fellow Italian Rebellin at bay as both finished out of the leading positions in the last of the 10 races of the season. The race was won by another Italian, Giro d'Italia title holder Damiano Cunego, who beat Dutchman Michael Boogerd and compatriot Ivan Basso in a sprint after catching them on the descent of the final climb just four kilometres from the finish. Evans finished in the same time in the bunch sprint. (Source: ABC)ABC Sports (OZ) (English)
