Sole Irish gold in jeopardy after horse fails dope test BY: Paul Hoskins IRISH sport suffered another huge blow to its pride last night when it emerged that Waterford Crystal, the horse Cian O'Connor rode to win Ireland's only gold medal at the Athens Olympics, failed a dope test during the Games. The Equestrian Federation of Ireland (EFI) said yesterday it had been informed by horse riding's international governing body that a sample taken from Waterford Crystal had "proved positive for prohibited substances" after the individual show jumping competition. O'Connor, who will request that the B sample taken in Athens also be tested, said he took responsibility for medication administered to his horse before the Games, but that he believed it had not been given performance-enhancing drugs. "I believe that I won this medal fair and square and that the horse has not been given anything that would make him jump better," he said. "I am utterly devastated that the A sample taken from my horse at the Games has tested positive. That notion amounts to cheating, and I am not a cheat. I plan to have the B sample tested as soon as possible and to proceed from there with the EFI." If Waterford Crystal's second sample is positive, O'Connor could be stripped of his gold medal, Ireland's first-ever in an equestrian event at the Olympics. It would be a crushing blow for sport and morale in Ireland, with O'Connor's success having eased the pain of the Michelle Smith scandal. The Irish swimmer won three gold medals at the 1996 Olympics, but later was found guilty of tampering with a urine sample during a drugs test and banned for four years. The Irish federation said O'Connor had informed them of treatment for a mild fetlock injury given to Waterford Crystal on 22 July. The vet had prescribed mild sedation to prevent the horse injuring himself further during hydrotherapy treatment. "I can categorically state that the medication administered by me was not a performance-enhancing substance, but was used after careful consideration, in the best interests of the horse's welfare," veterinary surgeon James Sheeran told the EFI. He also said that he could not understand how the medication could still have been present in the horse's system by the time samples were taken at the Games over a month later. EFI president Avril Doyle said she did not condone the use of prohibited substances in competition under any circumstances. However, she added: "The Federation stands behind Cian O'Connor in his bid to clarify the situation, and respects his right of due process." If the B-sample is positive, the person responsible must explain the horse's positive test within 10 days. Subsequently, FEI will compile a case file to be submitted to the federation's judicial committee for its decision. The person responsible then has 30 days to appeal any FEI decision to the Court of Arbitration for Sport. In a separate statement yesterday the International Federation for Equestrian Sport (FEI) said four out of 40 horses tested for drugs at the Athens Games had returned positive samples. FEI would not release or confirm the names of the horses whose A samples were positive. (Source: News Scotsman)News Scotsman Com
Malaysia Airlines Herald Sun Tour

By: Michael Stevens 21oct04 SOUTH Australian teenager Mathew Rex led the charge of the young guns in yesterday's Bendigo kermesse stage of the Malaysia Airlines Herald Sun Tour. Pictures: Stage 8 | More pictures Where to see the action tomorrow But the status quo remained at the top of the leaderboard with Tasmanian Karl Menzies still in yellow, albeit by only 4sec from his Bicycle Superstore teammate David McKenzie. Rex, 19, riding for CGU Insurance, made the most of his opportunity when he found himself in a breakaway group of six with 10 laps remaining in the 30-lap event around Bendigo's Lake Weeroona. When more experienced rivals Eric Wohlberg, Christian Lademann and David Harrigan not prepared to work to keep the peloton at bay it was left to Rex, Queenslander Mark Roland (Victorian State Home Loans) and Victorian Richard England to force the pace. The trio stretched its lead to 1min 14sec two laps from the finish and although McKenzie was urging his teammates to rally, Rex still had a 50sec margin when he crossed the line ahead of Roland and England. One of the youngest riders in the tour, Rex earned his spot by winning the opening round of the Tattersall's Cup series in Werribee, and said he was now riding full time in pursuit of his cycling dream. He has no illusions about his prospects for the remainder of the Tour. "Just survive," was his succinct reply when asked how he expected to perform. "It's been pretty hard," he said. "I didn't have much fun in the big hill stages." England, 23, summed up the feeling of his breakaway trio when he said it was those without professional contracts who were prepared to do all the work. "It was hard doing a lead-out into the wind, and in the last 20m I went from first to third," he said. "I am using the road to put miles into my legs for the track season, which is my speciality, and I'm looking forward to that." McKenzie, 30, who led the bunch sprint home in fourth place, said it didn't matter to him if his teammate Menzies was still in front when the Tour hits Traralgon on Sunday. "The name of the game is as long as someone with the Superstore jersey has the yellow on Sunday, I'll be just as happy," McKenzie said. "I've been riding long enough that there's no egos. Karl deserves every day he's had the yellow (almost from the opening stage in Carlton). He's ridden above himself . . . he came in as a last-minute replacement . . . that's awesome, we're stoked to see him doing so well. "And he's just so casual about it. But with Karl and I, we've got to try to gap ourselves as much as we can from guys like Luke (Roberts), Jonas (Ljungblad) and Ben Brooks. "Maybe I'm overlooking a couple, but in my mind they're the three who are going to put more than a minute into me up (Mt) Baw Baw. "They might not; I might go with them, I don't know. You guys have seen me go up climbs before, I'm either good or really bad. "If I'm really bad, that's it, I won't win the Tour. If I'm really good, I know I can go with them, we'll just have to wait and see." McKenzie, who has won 11 stages of the Herald Sun Tour and last year's inaugural Tour of Queensland, added that he was looking forward to the Mt Baw Baw "showdown". "I'd rather Baw Baw than a gradual climb," he said. "I'd rather hit the bottom and know it's 110 per cent for 6km, whereas anything can happen on that 10km climb at Apollo Bay. "Saturday, it's every man for himself. I'd rather a showdown than tactics come into it." Athens Olympic gold medallist Roberts (Latrobe City) remains poised to pounce in third place, 49sec off the pace, with Ljungblad (Europcar/Pelaco), fourth at 51sec. Brooks, riding for McGee/NSW Institute of Sport, is fifth, 1min 35sec behind. Hamilton's Gold: Russians Appeal
Posted Wed Oct 20 12:19:15 2004 (EDT in North America)
Russia have appealed to the Court of Arbitration for Sport against American cyclist Tyler Hamilton's Olympic gold. Hamilton was allowed to keep his time-trial gold from Athens despite testing positive for a blood transfusion. The International Olympic Committee argued the B sample, or second test, had been destroyed by deep-freezing. But Russia Olympic Committee told the CAS Hamilton should be stripped of his medal, which should go to Russian Vyacheslav Ekimov who finished second. The appeal from the Russian body said: "The ROC insists on the disqualification of Hamilton." Hamilton was told he had given a positive A, or first, test for a blood transfusion at the Olympics in Athens on 18 August. But the IOC halted its investigation when his back-up specimen was mistakenly frozen. IOC rules state an athlete is only guilty when both samples come back positive. Hamilton is the first cyclist to have tested positive for blood doping - when athletes inject blood from another person in order to increase red blood cells and improve stamina. And he later failed another test after winning a time trial in the Tour of Spain on 11 September. The 33-year-old has maintained he is "100%" innocent of the charges but, if found guilty, could be banned for two years, effectively ending his career. (Source: BBC)BBC Site - (English)
