Classique des Alpes: 2005 to be last edition
Posted Thu Oct 21 16:02:59 2004 (EDT in North America)

The respected daily newspaper, the Dauphiné Libéré, quoting Jean-Marie Leblanc of Amory
Sports Organization, the organizer of the event, reported yesterday that the 2005 edition
of the Classique des Alpes event would be the last.

There are apparently unresolved concerns with the French governing body, FFC, about the
categories that the race is to be open to and with it's chronological position on the
race calendar.

Malaysia Airlines Herald Sun Tour

YOUNG Victorian rider Richard England was taken by ambulance to the Austin Hospital last night
after a horrific crash in yesterday's 9th stage of the Malaysia Airlines Herald Sun Tour.

England, 23, suffered severe facial injuries when he fell on a plank bridge about 90kms into
the 151.8km stage.

Tour doctor Simon Hillman said England was in shock and did not know what had happened after
the crash.

"He will require plastic surgery on his nose and upper lip because his injuries are quite
severe," Dr Hillman said.

England fell when his wheel became entangled in one of the bridge planks, although the bridge
had been covered with carpet as a protective measure.

By: Michael Stevens 22oct04 (Australian Time) SIMON Gerrans lived his dream in winning yesterday's ninth stage of the Malaysia Airlines Herald Sun Tour in his home town of Mansfield -- and then dedicated the victory to his late uncle Noel who passed away earlier this year. And in a day of sensations, Victorian David McKenzie has taken over the leader's yellow jersey after his Bicycle Superstore teammate Karl Menzies was injured in a fall. An emotional Gerrans rode over the line with his hand on his chest and pointed to the sky in memory of his father's brother. "I'd like to dedicate this stage to uncle Noel," Gerrans said. "This one's for him because I wasn't able to go to his funeral as I was in Europe." Riding for Jayco, Gerrans, 24, made his winning move with Queenslander Ben Johnson (Malaysia Airlines) at the 129km mark of the 151.8km stage from Nagambie and the duo held the peloton at bay, although the margin was down to 12sec at one point. After arriving home only 10 hours before the start of the event, the highly fancied Gerrans dropped out of overall contention when he had a bad day on Tuesday. Yesterday, with schoolchildren and family cheering him on over the final 20km, he attacked Johnson in the last 200m to win clearly. "I've been thinking about today for the whole Tour and to able to actually win is a dream come true," he said. Johnson, 22, from Noosa on the Sunshine Coast, who came into the tour on the recommendation of German Marcel Wust, said he and Gerrans had taken their opportunity when it came. McKenzie, 30 and riding in his 10th Tour, has held the yellow jersey before but never at this late stage of the event, which has only three days remaining. "Today I had a really bad day and it was exceptionally bad because I didn't even feel well on the flat leading up to the first climb," he said. "So I'm hoping I'll have a chance to recover because tomorrow's not going to be super tough, and get ready for the big one (Mt Baw Baw on Saturday)." McKenzie took over the yellow jersey from Menzies when he won the bunch sprint for third placing, while his teammate turned in a superb performance after falling at Watchbox Creek, nearly 50km from the finish. "I was hoping he'd hold it, to be honest, 4sec is nothing," McKenzie said. "All it is for me at the moment is the jersey and it doesn't mean I'm going to win the Tour or anything. "He deserved it today, to crash like that. Scott (Guyton) and I couldn't go back because we were on the climb by then and if they went full gas I would have been in trouble, so I wouldn't have been any use and then our whole team would have been in trouble. "So we just had to sit and wait. And I just want to say to the rest of the peloton that it was pretty awesome that they didn't race hard. "Everyone yelled out, 'Yellow jersey's crashed, let's hold up for a minute'." McKenzie said he had to dig deep to win yesterday's bunch sprint, 9sec behind Gerrans. "I know now every second's counting," he said. "I couldn't get any bonus seconds on the road, Luke (Roberts) got them on the KOMs (king of the mountains), that's 10 seconds, so I had to get this sprint. "I had to take this bigger margin out of them, not just Luke but Ben Brooks and (Jonas) Ljungblad . . . guys who are potentially going to ride away from me up Baw Baw." In an ominous sign for McKenzie, Roberts (Latrobe City) and Ljungblad (Europcar/Pelaco) featured in the placings in each of yesterday two category 2 and one category 3 climbs through the Strathbogie Ranges. While McKenzie now leads the general classification by 11sec from Menzies, Ljungblad has moved into third place, 33sec behind, while Roberts is fourth, 47sec off the pace.
