Swede takes contol

From: AAP
23oct04 (Australian Time)

NINE months ago cyclist Matthew Lloyd had never competed in an open road race - today he claimed victory in
the toughest stage of the Herald Sun Tour.

The 21-year-old from Melbourne won the arduous Warragul to Mt Baw Baw stage of some 87.7 km but almost half
of the route is uphill.

In a dramatic penultimate stage of the tour, Swede Jonas Ljungblad seized the overall lead from Victorian
favourite David McKenzie.

After turning a 43-second deficit into a 1 minute 33 second lead, he is now poised to claim victory after
the final stage at Traralgon tomorrow.

Ljungblad, who has won three stages - two this week and one in 2002 - only has to stay upright in the 81.6km
kermesse around the streets of Traralgon to win the biggest race of his life.

"I felt very nervous before the start of today's race and I am glad to have finished so high up in the stage
and of course, take the yellow leader's jersey," Ljungblad said.

"I rode up Mt Baw Baw in 2002 and finished seventh, so I knew what to expect, I knew where the flat spots were
and when the climbs got a bit more difficult."

"That experience really helped me today.

"Two years ago I rode on a 23 chain ring, today I switched it to a 25 and it made a big difference," he said.

The 93s difference will be too much for McKenzie to regain - unless Ljungblad himself strikes a problem. While
Ljungblad finished the Mt Baw Baw stage in fifth place, McKenzie limped home in 14th place, a clear two
minutes behind the Swede and almost four minutes behind surprise packet Lloyd.

Early tour leader Karl Menzies was dumped from second to ninth after finishing Mt Baw Baw in 25th position.

At the start of the day, South Australia's gold medal Olympian Luke Roberts would have given himself a chance
of taking the honours, but a puncture just eight kilometres from the finish effectively ended his hopes.

Lloyd, who trains in the Dandenongs, is in his first season as a professional rider after brief flirtations
with rowing and triathlons.

"This is awesome, I didn't expect to win, I just thought I would be chasing backsides all day," Lloyd said.

"Without doubt this is the biggest thing I've ever won."

SixDay Site going BLOG
Posted Sat Oct 23 03:11:05 2004 (EDT in North America)

The Banner Ads will be gone....
The SixDay management have decided that 741.com is a reliable enough Web Hosting company
and have purchased a Subscription which will allow you to view the site without the Banners
that you are used to seeing. Since it is currently weekend, the banners might take a few days
to disappear completely.

Part of the rational for upgrading the site of course was that the banners were a nuisance.
However, we at SixDay never thought they were too annoying else we would not have moved the
site to 741.com

The main reason we subscribed as opposed to continuing with the Free Hosting was that there is
now sufficient interest in both the Six Day racing scene and in the News Service that Sixday
publishes to warrant syndicating the site.

Since syndication involves Hot Linking and since Hot Linking is not permitted to Free Accounts
the solution was obvious.

So the RSS Blog type newsfeed is just days away. It is being tested currently and so far the
tests have indicated that there are no problems.

So stay tuned and we will post the instructions so that you can access the SixDay news via
your RSS Reader.

And in closing, the SixDay staff would like to thank the increasingly greater numbers of
regular readers for their loyalty. We hope to improve our services and providing an RSS feed
was seen by SixDay management as a natural next step.
