Bologna: Enquiry commences tomorrow
Posted Tue Oct 26 09:30:13 2004 (EDT in North America)
Ten Riders, Two Soigneurs under investigation Twelve individuals, ten riders and two soigneurs, are summoned to appear before a tribunal in Bologna (Italy) tomorrow to face doping charges laid by Florentine prosecutor Luigi Bocciolini. The ten riders, Alberto Elli, Giuliano Figueras, Pavel Padrnos, Stefano Zanini, Dario Frigo, Domenico Romano, Giuseppe Di Grande, Giampaolo Mondini, Daniele Di Paoli and Ermanno Brignoli, are accused of being in possession of doping agents. The two soigneurs are Primo Pregnolato, of the former Mercatone Uno squad, Marco Pantani's team before he killed himself with a cocaine overdose last Valentine's Day (February 14) in a fleabag Rimini hotel, and Spaniard Xavier Francisco Fernandez. The current trial stems from the spectacular raid made during the 2001 Giro d'Italia when, on June 6, 2001, after the stage which finished in San Remo, hundreds of police from the Drug Division minutely searched the rooms and vehicles of the whole Giro Entourage. During the course of the search, extremely large quantities of doping products were found. Several other individuals, originally found with caffein are not to be prosecuted as caffein has been removed from the prohibited substances list. (Source: AFP)AFP (Multilingual)
