Herne Hill: Legendary velodrome's Olympic bid in the balance
Posted Fri Oct 29 21:55:52 2004 (EDT in North America)
Crucial negotiations taking place could transform an historic Herne Hill
cycling track into a Olympic training centre.

Campaigners are desperate to see the Herne Hill Velodrome turned into a world-class venue fit for
Olympians but first they have to convince the freeholders, the Dulwich Estate, they have the financial
plans to realise their dream.

If the London Velodrome Trust (LVT) which represents the users finds between £6million and £7million,
it will have funding to build a covered all-weather track, a climbing wall and health facilities for
community use.

The velodrome, beside Burbage Road, was used in the 1948 Olypics but currently cannot be used in
bad weather.

Time is running out as the lease ends on October 31, meaning Southwark Council which currently holds the
short-term lease and LVT have to come to a new agreement with the Dulwich Estate.

In a worst case scenario for the LVT, the Dulwich Estate could look at other ways of raising money from
the site rather than cycling though it would be difficult to secure planning permission for any major
changes. LVT chairman Graeme Geddes said: "There is broad support right across Southwark and much
broader support across south London. Everyone thinks it should be saved. It is a sports heritage facility.
We are bidding for the Olympics in London and although events will not be held in the velodrome, it is
very important in terms of sports development.

"Many champions have come up through the velodrome and it is something we need to save."

Dulwich Estate chief executive John Major said although he would like to see the velodrome's redevelopment,
his aim was to generate a return for the estate's beneficiaries three schools in Dulwich and a number of
other schools located outside the area.

He said: "The tenant has to demonstrate they can cover the lease in the long-term and cover the
running costs of the site.

"We do not want to have something that becomes financially unviable."

A Southwark Council spokesman said: "Southwark Council is meeting with the Dulwich Estate this week.

"At this meeting we will seek clarification on whether we will be granted a new long-term lease."

New Zealand's Henderson furious as bike disappears on an Odyssey
Posted Fri Oct 29 21:35:20 2004 (EDT in North America)

Olympic cyclist Greg Henderson says he is "filthy" that his racing bike is still
somewhere on the ocean between Greece and New Zealand.

Henderson confirmed today he was still without the bike that carried him to fourth in the points race in
Athens in August, because it was being sea-freighted back by national governing body Bike NZ.

It meant Henderson's preparation for big events later in the year, notably the World Cup event in
Los Angeles he'd targeted in December, was thrown into chaos.

"Sea freight? I'm absolutely filthy about it. I just can't believe it. I haven't got my track bike,
how can I train?" he told Radio Sport.

His New Zealand teammates were also without their bikes.

Henderson said he had received several invitations to ride in other international meets, which
he couldn't accept.

He said it was "ridiculous" the bikes were due to arrive about 10 days before the Los Angeles event,
meaning he couldn't do any decent training.

Malaysian Josiah Ng skips meet in Moscow to help fellow cyclists settle in
Posted Fri Oct 29 21:03:28 2004 (EDT in North America)

A big-hearted Josiah Ng has made a decision to skip the opening round of the
Track Cycling World Cup in Moscow next weekend.

He is not out because of injury.

The decision is prompted by the impending arrival in the United States of two fellow Malaysian cyclists,
Rizal Tisin and Mohd Sayuti Zahit.

Rizal and Sayuti are set to join Josiah in training under American coach Mark Whitehead in Long Beach,
California, from Nov 1. It is a stint for the duo under the National Sport Council's (NSC) world-class
cycling project.

JOSIAH: I'm staying back to make sure they feel welcomed.

Josiah said in a telephone interview from Long Beach yesterday that he preferred to help the duo settle
down in the new environment.

"It's not that I am not confident of myself after the Athens Olympics," he said.

"I will be welcoming two of my new teammates, who will be leaving the Malaysian shores for the first time.
They will be far away from their families and they may find some difficulties in adjusting to life here.
I have experienced this before.

"I am staying back to make sure they will feel welcomed. I have been quite busy over the past few weeks
after I was told that they would be coming here.

"Besides training, I have done travel arrangements for them and got the rooms furnished and ready for them.
Everything should be in order when they arrive here on Nov 1."

Rizal and Mohd Sayuti will stay with Josiah in an apartment and the monthly rent will be borne by the NSC.

"They should feel comfortable here. I will fix the Internet and they can e-mail their families. I will also
fix cable television, which has 200 channels," said Josiah.

"I have to help make sure that they don't get bored here. I hope that they can make their training base
here for four years until the next Olympics. All they have to do is to stay focussed and train hard with me."

His concern for the duo is understandable.

In May, Rizal and two other cyclists, Fairuz Izani and Faizal Noh, were down for a six-month stint under
Whitehead. But they were unable to adjust to the environment and returned after just one month. Then, Josiah
was based at the World Cycling Centre in Switzerland.

Josiah's kind gesture to skip the first leg of the World Cup means he misses an early chance to gain early
qualification for the World Track Championships, which will be held in Los Angeles in March next year.

But Josiah is confident that he will still be able to make the cut. He has to finish among the top six in
any of the three remaining legs of the World Cup after this to earn automatic qualification.

The legs after Moscow are in Los Angeles (Dec 10-12), Manchester (Jan 7-9) and Sydney (Feb 18-20).

"I will take part with Rizal and Sayuti in the next three legs. I have never failed to qualify for the
World Championships in four years. I am definitely confident of making it again," said Josiah, who had
made Malaysia proud by reaching the final of the keirin event in the Athens Olympics.

New Zealand - Plenty of competition for Guyton in Southland
Posted Fri Oct 29 20:35:33 2004 (EDT in North America)

With four former winners and 31 international riders on the entry list,
the Tour of Southland cycling race beginning on Monday is tipped to be hotly contested.

Team Southland Times, boasting defending champion Scott Guyton of Rotorua, and former winners American
John Lieswyn and Hamilton's Glen Mitchell, start as outright favourites to retain their teams title.

Dunedin's Greg Henderson and Te Awamutu's Tim Gudsell make up the rest of the Southland Times team.

Guyton, who also won the tour in 1998, made up 50 seconds on leader Jeremy Yates in the penultimate stage
to grab his 2003 win.

Te Awamutu's Karl Moore, riding for Rabobank, is another former champion hoping to upset the powerful
Southland Times line up.

Zookeepers Cafe -- containing Hayden Roulston, of Ashburton, Heath Blackgrove, of Waimate, Marc Ryan, of
Timaru, Craig Thomson, of Dunedin, and Gordon McCaulay, of Wellington -- look capable of posing a strong
challenge to Southland Times as do Team Ultimo, an all-international team of Germans Fabian Mathes,
Hans Fischer and Christian Brockhoff, Australian Josh Akarsu and France's Olivier Fesque.

The three Germans are elite members of the Marin team from Herpersdorf while Fesquet was last year's Aude
region champion and is a notable road sprinter.

Tour organiser Bruce Ross told NZPA this year's line up was probably the strongest field assembled in
48 years the tour has been contested.

With 31 international riders, including a strong contingent of 15 Americans, there were several exciting
combinations this year and many possibles among the 95-strong field to take the individual title.

One foreign rider to watch is Swiss cyclist Pascal Hugerbuhler, who will be riding as part of the
Meadow Fresh team.

Hugerbuhler competed strongly during the 2004 European season, winning two races in Austria and recording
several other impressive performances.

Ross said American Colby Pearce, riding for the SIT Zero Fees team, was another who could trouble Guyton.

"Pearce has won seven United States national track titles and took part in the Athens Olympics.

"He is using the Southland tour as part of his build up to next year's world track championship."

In the under-23 classification, Ross said Invercargill rider Matt King, riding in the Winton's Middle Pub
team, could be one to feature.

This year's tour of 10 stages, including a team time trial and an individual time trial, covers 645km and
takes in some of the deep south's best scenic areas.

It begins with the team time trial around Invercargill's Queens Park on Monday.

Stage details:-

Monday: Stage 1 - teams time trial, Queens Park, Invercargill 8.3km. Stage 2 - Invercargill-Bluff Hill, 79km.

Tuesday: Stage 3 - Invercargill-Tuatapere 112km. Stage 4 - Tuatapere to Winton , 86.3km.

Wednesday: Stage 5 - Lumsden-Crown Range 130.8km.

Thursday: Stage 6 - Individual Time Trial 15km. Stage 7 - Riversdale to Invercargill via Gore, 129.4km.

Friday: Stage 8 - Winton-Te Anau 163km.

Saturday: Stage 9 Te Anau-Lumsden 79km. Stage 10 - Winton-Invercargill 64.4km.

Two Malaysian Cyclists Sacrifice Hari Raya To Train In The US
Posted Fri Oct 29 20:21:05 2004 (EDT in North America)

KUALA LUMPUR, Oct 29 (Bernama) -- Malaysia's budding cyclists, Mohd Sayuti Zahit and
Mohd Rizal Sitin will leave to the United States on Monday for a four-year training stint under renowned track
cycling coach Mark Whitehead.

In their desire to qualify for the World Track Cycling Championship in Los Angeles, US next March,
Mohd Sayuti and Mohd Rizal have decided to sacrifice the opportunity to celebrate Hari Raya Aidilfitri
with their families.

For Mohd Sayuti, 20, celebrations can take a back seat as his main aim is surpass the qualifying mark
for the team event during the championship.

"For the individual event, it will depend on coach Mark Whitehead to decide after accessing my
performance," he told Bernama here Friday.

The Kelantan lad has also shelved his plans of pursuing his studies further to join Josiah Ng in
Long Beach, Los Angeles under the sponsorship of the National Sports Council (NSC) in a four-year
Pelumba Trek Kelas Dunia Malaysia programme.

National criterium specialist and 2004 Olympian of the Year award winner Josiah is said to have skipped
the World Track Cycling Championship series in Moscow from Nov 5-7, to receive Mohd Sayuti and Mohd Rizal.

That miss had also dashed his chances of seeking an early qualification for the Los Angeles championship.

Josiah believes he and his two new teammates will be able to make it to the championship by finishing
in the top six of one of the World Cup series held in Los Angeles (Dec 10-12), Manchester (Jan 7-9)
and Sydney (Feb 18-20.

"Actually we had considered joining Josiah in Moscow but since there were other pressing issues,
we decided against it," he said.

Mohd Rizal meanwhile hopes the training in Long Beach, Los Angeles would enable the country to put up
a formidable sprint team in the future.

"I hope to garner as much points during the three series to qualify for the final in March. I also
hope to prepare myself for the Manila 2005 SEA Games and the Commonwealth Games in Melbourne (2006) as
well as the 2008 Beijing Olympics," he said.

Last May, Rizal together with Fairuz Izni Abdul Ghani and Mohd Faizal Noh were sent to San Diego for a
training stint but returned a month later after failing to adapt to the conditions there.

"This time around I will not repeat the same mistake. I have been given a second chance and I hope
to make the best of it," he said.

Apart from taking care of the rent for their stay, the NSC is also providing allowances and tickets for
the stint.

Discovery Channel looking at Basso
Posted Fri Oct 29 17:07:11 2004 (EDT in North America)

Lance Armstrong's Discovery Channel cycling team admitted they are interested
in signing Italian Ivan Basso in the future.

Basso, 26, came third in this year's Tour de France and impressed America's six-time winner Armstrong.

"We've been interested for a long while in Basso as a cyclist and a person," said Discovery's Jogi Muller.

But Basso's Team CSC boss Bjarne Riis said: "He has a three-year contract and he will not leave the team."

Basso joined Team CSC from Fassa Bortolo in January, replacing Tyler Hamilton as team leader.

And Discovery's sporting director Johan Bruyneel is a big fan, according to Muller.

"Johan has a list of favourites and Basso is on it," said Muller.

"But he is under contract. There are no negotiations at the moment."

Armstrong has yet to confirm whether he will race in next year's Tour.

Speaking after Thursday's unveiling of the 2005 Tour route, Bruyneel gave odds of "50-50" as to
whether the 33-year-old will take the start line on 2 July.

"He will take part if the thinks he can win it," Bruyneel said. "If things do not go according
to how he likes them, it's possible he will not be here."

Cipollini: One more season
Posted Fri Oct 29 08:06:58 2004 (EDT in North America)

Cipollini puts retirement on hold: Italian sprinter Mario Cipollini will
ride for the Liquigas Sport - Bianchi team next season rather than retire as expected.

The 37-year old, who holds the record for the most number of Giro d'Italia stage wins with 42, retired
two years ago before making a comeback.

Cipollini has also won 12 stages of the Tour, but has been plagued by injury over the past year.

"[I will ride] with the enthusiasm as if it were my first season," said the rider also known as
"Super Mario".

Cipollini, the 2002 world road race champion, said he would line up for the first World Cup race of
next year, Milan to San Remo
