One of Tasmania's biggest sporting events will not go ahead this year after the withdrawal of its major sponsor. The Launceston City Council has pulled out of the Launceston Cycling Classic, scheduled for late December. Thousands lined the streets of Launceston last year to watch Australian Tour de France star Robbie McEwen win the second staging of the Launceston Classic. As recently as last week, the 2004 event's $100,000 budget seemed secure after the State Government offered an extra $20,000 in support. But late yesterday the council said some committee members had disagreed on how to organise the event, exposing ratepayers to increased financial risk. The chairman, Graeme Beams, was not present at yesterday's meeting. "I'm disappointed, I think it would have been good for Launceston. However we've got make sure everything works and works properly," he said. The council is now looking at staging a community-based cycling event in the new year. The national coach of Cycling Australia, Ron Bonham, said the loss of Australia's richest one-day event was a significant blow to the sport. Mr Bonham said the Classic gave the nation's younger riders a chance to take on some of the world's best. "I think it's a huge loss to Australian cycling," he said. "At any stage where we do lose a major event we lose public exposure and we lose the opportunity to promote our sport before the public - I think that is a major blow to cycling." 18th. Tour de Burkina Faso: Stage Four (Saturday)
Posted Sat Oct 30 18:53:05 2004 (EDT in North America)
The overnight leader of the general classification A.Wahab Sawadogo lost his Maillot Jaune leader's jersey on stage four. Belgian Karel Pattyn, with a single second lead over second placed Tidiane Ouedraogo, is now current owner with Sawadogo now in third spot 38 seconds off the pace. But the home turf riders continue to hold their own against the European visitors. The top six spots on General Classification are shared three apiece between the locals and the visitors. And with three different leaders in four stages, and seven stages still to be contested, the final Leader's Jersey is still up for grabs. 30 Oct - Stage 4 - Sikasso-Orodara 96.5 km Place No. Name Nat Team Time 1 151 CUYLITS Gunter BEL VAM 2h 22' 26" 2 054 SAWADOGO Mahamadi BUR SIF 00' 02" 3 105 DAVID Thierry FRA MIX 00' 03" 4 003 TALL Saidou BUR ASF 00' 03" 5 156 VAN MECHELEN Joris BEL VAM 00' 07" 6 053 OUEDRAOGO Tidiane BUR SIF 00' 07" 7 154 PATTYN Karel BEL VAM 00' 07" 8 141 ANDRADE Luis ANG ANG 00' 09" 9 132 DEBRABANT Fabrice FRA PHA 00' 10" 10 074 VENDRIG Bart NED RTP 00' 10" 11 051 OUEDRAOGO R.Jeremie BUR SIF 00' 15" 12 104 CHEVALIER Pierre FRA MIX 00' 36" 13 001 ROUAMBA Saïdou BUR ASF 00' 43" 14 155 ROOSEN Stefan BEL VAM 00' 43" 15 135 LELIEVRE Michel FRA PHA 00' 43" 16 043 THIAM Malick SEN SEN 00' 43" 17 134 FLAHAUT Denis FRA PHA 00' 49" 18 056 SANFO Seydou BUR SIF 00' 49" 19 076 WALGIEN Jorry NED RTP 00' 49" 20 036 VIDAL Jeremie FRA YVE 00' 49" 21 152 SOUDRE Issa BUR VAM 00' 49" 22 052 SAWADOGO A.Wahab BUR SIF 00' 49" 23 144 PIRES Jose ANG ANG 00' 49" 24 041 KEITA Olivier SEN SEN 00' 49" 25 125 NOSSI Kossi TOG TOG 00' 49" Overall after Stage Four Place No. Name Nat Team Time 1 154 PATTYN Karel BEL VAM 10h 06' 57" 2 053 OUEDRAOGO Tidiane BUR SIF 00' 01" 3 052 SAWADOGO A.Wahab BUR SIF 00' 38" 4 002 ZONGO Laurent BUR ASF 00' 46" 5 132 DEBRABANT Fabrice FRA PHA 00' 48" 6 104 CHEVALIER Pierre FRA MIX 00' 53" 7 054 SAWADOGO Mahamadi BUR SIF 01' 03" 8 134 FLAHAUT Denis FRA PHA 01' 30" 9 051 OUEDRAOGO R.Jeremie BUR SIF 01' 35" 10 105 DAVID Thierry FRA MIX 01' 53" 11 151 CUYLITS Gunter BEL VAM 02' 01" 12 135 LELIEVRE Michel FRA PHA 02' 09" 13 001 ROUAMBA Saidou BUR ASF 02' 31" 14 011 BAGAYOKO Adama MLI MAL 02' 37" 15 043 THIAM Malick SEN SEN 02' 47" 16 143 MANUEL Osvaldo ANG ANG 02' 53" 17 115 OUEDRAOGO Ahmed COI COI 02' 53" 18 003 TALL Saïdou BUR ASF 03' 09" 19 131 BAEFCOP Yann FRA PHA 04' 11" 20 152 SOUDRE Issa BUR VAM 04' 22" 21 056 SANFO Seydou BUR SIF 04' 43" 22 042 THIAM Abdoulaye SEN SEN 04' 58" 23 094 GNANSOUNOU Dona BEN BEN 05' 06" 24 144 PIRES Jose ANG ANG 05' 23" 25 141 ANDRADE Luis ANG ANG 05' 30" The Stages: 27 Oct - Stage 1 - Kokologo-Boromo 136.0 km 28 Oct - Stage 2 - Boromo-Hounde (scheduled) 74.0 km Stage 2 - Oasi - Hounde (raced) 52.0 km 29 Oct - Stage 3 - Orodara-Sikasso 121.0 km 30 Oct - Stage 4 - Sikasso-Orodara 96.5 km 31 Oct - Stage 5 - Bobo Dioulasso-Bobo Dioulasso 121.0 km 01 Nov - Stage 6 - Pa (Sabou)-Koudougou 156.5 km 02 Nov - Restday 03 Nov - Stage 7 - Ouagadougou-Yako 100.5 km 04 Nov - Stage 8 - Yako-Ouahigouya 74.0 km 05 Nov - Stage 9 - Gourcy-Ziniare 180.0 km 06 Nov - Stage 10 - Linoghin-Pouytenga 96.0 km 07 Nov - Stage 11 - Kombissiri-Ouagadougou 85.0 km (Source: Le Tour)Le Tour Website (Multilingual)
Hamilton Teammate Santiago Perez: Guilty of Blood Transfusion
Posted Sat Oct 30 17:03:21 2004 (EDT in North America)
Perez: I'm not quilty "The news is that I had an irregularity in my anti-doping Blood Test resulting from having transfused blood donated by other individuals," said Santi Perez. "I want to say that I have not had any transfusion, and frankly I am surprised by the news and the attitude of the UCI when it is known that their tests are plagued with irregularities." It is understood by SixDay that there is a problem with the B sample. Apparently neither the rider nor a representative from his team were present as is required by the UCI regulations. But there is speculation that the Perez irregularity, coupled with the Hamilton Affair recently, might indicate that Blood Transfusions were the order of the day for the Swiss Phonak squad. 27 year old Perez finished second overall at the recent Vuelta or Tour of Spain.
