Both the UCI and Shimano consider China as one of the main targets for promotion of the cycling sport BEIJING, China (BRAIN)--Shimano re-upped as a major sponsor of UCI, cycling's international governing body, during ceremonies last week in Beijing, China. There were two reasons for holding the ceremony in China, said Harald Troost, Shimano Europe's press relations officer. "First of all because Beijing will host the Olympic Games in 2008 and Shimano will be there to provide technical support during the cycling events. Furthermore, both the UCI and Shimano consider China as one of the main targets for promotion of the cycling sport," Troost said. Yoshizo Shimano, Shimano chairman, and Hein Verbruggen, chairman of UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale) were the official signatories. The contract extends Shimano's participation through 2008. The components maker has been a UCI sponsor since 1999, and an official supplier of technical and mechanical services at UCI-authorized world championships and other cycling competitions, including Olympic-level road, mountain, track and cyclocross races. Phonak to sue UCI ?
Wed, 3 Nov 2004 20:59:59 -0500
ZURICH (AP) - Lawyers representing the Swiss-based cycling team Phonak are preparing to sue the International Olympic Committee, questioning the legitimacy of Tyler Hamilton's positive doping test, the Swiss daily Blick reported Wednesday. Hamilton, who won a gold medal at the Athens Olympics, faces a two-year ban after tests taken at the Spanish Vuelta race in September indicated he had received a blood transfusion to boost his endurance. An initial test in Athens also pointed to blood doping. The American was cleared, however, because his backup specimen mistakenly was frozen and there were too few red blood cells remaining for a valid test. But Phonak doubts the validity of the tests and wants to carry out its own examination of the samples, Blick said. The team has appointed a panel of five experts to check Hamilton's two positive samples, but the IOC has failed to supply the necessary documents, Urs Freuler, Phonak team manager, told The Associated Press ``What we want is just the truth,'' Freuler said. ``Is it so, or is it not so?'' Freuler said he was unable to confirm the plan to sue, referring questions to Phonak's lawyers who were not immediately available to comment. The IOC said it was not aware of the case. Spanish rider Santi Perez - also with Phonak - was last week notified by UCI, cycling's governing body, that he had an irregular blood test, indicating he had undergone a transfusion. ``The test used was the same type that was used on Tyler Hamilton. Because this test's soundness and interpretation are still being disputed, the team management is maintaining the rider's innocence,'' Phonak said in a statement. 18th. Tour de Burkina Faso: Stage 7 (Wednesday)
Wed, 3 Nov 2004 17:41:26 -0500
Peloton in two parts In good shape after a well deserved rest day, the riders in the peloton took off to a fast start immediately at the exit of Ouagadougou where they had covered the first 7 kms in a celebrated parade. The field stretches rapidly and breaks into two parts at kilometre 15. The leading 35 riders including yellow jersey Abdul Wahab Sawadogo, manages to increase their advance on the second group to up to 1'35'' at km 33. That's when pink jersey Gunter Cuylits decides to break away. He is rapidly caught by Saïdou Rouamba, with whom he works while the peloton gets back together again. Mahamadi Sawadogo, in his home town As the intermediate sprint of Boussé moves closer, two men decide to ease up the pace and take off to try and catch the leaders: Angolan Mucanza and Mahamadi Sawadogo, the ever attacking rider who seems effortless as he gets closer to his home town. They are eventually caught by the peloton who remains 1'30'' adrift at kilometre 54. Third pair of escapees On this 7th stage, it appears that things work out by pairs when it comes to attacking. Philippe Chevalier and Michel Lelièvre manage to catch the escapees. At kilometre 76, with the help of Fabrice Debrabant and Karel Pattyn, also a breakaway duet, six men are in the front positions with a 30'' lead. But the gap drops down: only 15'', 15 kms from the finish. Rouamba chases for green Less than 10 kms from the line, as the peloton is bunched again and everyone is expecting a massed sprint, Mucanza decides to attack, followed by the energetic Saïdou Rouamba and his experience of 15 Tours of Faso completed. The decision is eventually to be decided between these two men. The Angolan proves to be more powerful and Rouamba finishes second.. again! The Burkina rider can however be satisfied with the 27 points earned that allow him to move closer to Denis Flahaut's green jersey (now only 4 points between both men). Flahaut won the peloton sprint and therefore finished third of the stage. Phonak on the Offensive
Wed, 3 Nov 2004 15:0:45 -0500
Phonak challenges Drug Test that smeared Tyler Hamilton and also almost cost his Olympic gold medal. An initial test at the Athens Games suggested the American had received an endurance-boosting blood transfusion. But the case was dropped after his 'B' sample was mistakenly frozen, leaving too few red blood cells to analyse. Phonak said it has appointed an expert panel to analyse Hamilton's samples, but declined to confirm reports it is planning legal action against the IOC. Team manager Urs Freuler claimed the Olympic governing body had failed to supply requested documents. "What we want is just the truth," he said. "Is it so, or is it not so?" The IOC said it had no information about a possible law suit or request from Phonak, but defended the testing system. "There is no reason to question the validity of the testing method," said spokeswoman Emmanuelle Moreau. Hamilton insists he is innocent and has vowed to clear his name. But the Russian Olympic Committee has filed an appeal with the Court of Arbitration for Sport seeking to strip Hamilton of his Olympic gold and give it to Vyacheslav Ekimov. Whatever the outcome of that action, Hamilton still faces a possible two-year ban because of a positive test two weeks after the Olympics. (Source: BBC)BBC Site - (English)
