Merckx - Maertens : A handshake in France
Thu, 4 Nov 2004 00:00:01 -0500

Long standing Feud ended

Eddy Merckx and Freddy Maertens have never been friends. There just was no chemistry between the two.

But the notorious World Championship in Barcelona in 1973 fueled a Feud that was to last 31 years.

Merckx always blamed Maertens for that defeat when Merckx finished fourth, out of the Medals altogether
as Felice Gimondi swept by Maertens for the win with Luis Ocana taking third.

At a reunion of Old Timers in France last weekend, however, the two finally came face to face after
all those years and shook hands.

"We were both wrong. With a hanshake we buried the Hatchet", said Maertens.

18th. Tour de Burkina Faso: Stage 8 (Thursday)
Thu, 4 Nov 2004 12:24:49 -0500

Keita in every attack
On a short course, it was important to hurry up in order to manage a real breakaway. But a lot of riders
having aimed at a long break, the peloton leaving Yako took off at very high speed. Immediately in the
first kilometre, the peloton stretches and unsuccessful attacks take place. At kilometre 12, a group of
8 takes off, but loses two riders due to punctures including Olivier Keita. Not too many regrets for
the Senegal leader, the group is indeed eventually caught back three kilometres later.

Burkina controls
Another attempt, led by Keita, who really deserves his red combativity jersey, is finally caught just
before the intermediate sprint of Gourcy (km 27). Abdoulaye Thiam (Sen), Karel Pattyn (Bel),
Michel Duvigneau or Gunter Cuylits all give it a go but it looks like attacks are forbidden today.
The Burkina riders ride a tactical race to protect their leader and chase every single attempt.

Flahaut preserves his green jersey
Kris Heremans (Bel) and Fabrice Debrabant (Fra) eventually try to break clear a last time, just under
the last kilometre mark. The truth is actually that Debrabant's mission is to chase the Belgian rider
in order to prepare the final sprint for his "Porte du Hainault" team sprinter. And it all works out!
Denis Flahaut flies off for the final effort and wins the stage with a comfortable lead ahead of Jorry
Walgien (Hol) and Saidou Rouamba (Bur), who has to settle, again, for third spot.

Lithuanian all round Rouleur and Sprinter par excellence, Vainsteins catapaulted to prominence when he
won the World Championship in 2000 at Plouay, France.

Seven years in the professional peleton have seen him notch up 24 wins; Paris-Brussels and a stage in the
Giro d'italia in 1999, Coppa Bernocchi in 2000 along with four stages of Tirreno-Adriatico stand to
his credit.

Injuries have sidelined him for much of the last three seasons with his sole recent win coming with a stage
of the Giro della Provincia di Lucca in 2003.

Looking to 2008: Chinese cooperate with Australian Sports Associations
Thu, 4 Nov 2004 0:53:49 -0500

China will cooperate with Australia for the next four years in sports as well as
sports-related fields and learn valuable experiences from the 2000 Olympics host, said
Chinese Olympic Committee president Yuan Weimin Monday in Beijing.

China will cooperate with Australia for the next four years in sports as well as sports-related fields
and learn valuable experiences from the 2000 Olympics host, said Chinese Olympic Committee president
Yuan Weimin Monday in Beijing.

"Australia boasts its strength in equestrian, swimming, tennis, cycling, athletics and aquatic events,
allowing for a large room for exchange and mutual complementary with China," said Yuan, who also heads
the General Administration of Sport of China.

Australia claimed seven gold, five silver and three bronze from swimming at the Athens Olympic Games
where they finished fourth in the medals tally with 17 gold, 16 silver and 16 bronze.

Cycling was their second gold mine as they bagged six gold plus two silver and two bronze.

Whereas China, second with 32 gold behind the United States in Athens, has been known for its prowess
in table tennis, badminton, shooting, diving and weightlifting.

"As the 2008 Olympic Games is drawing near, it is high time that we set up the framework of sports
cooperation in the form of agreement signing," Yuan said at the signing ceremony of Agreement of
Cooperation between Australian Olympic Committee (AOC) and Chinese Olympic Committee (COC).

"We will carry out more extensive cooperation in fields like doping control and sports marketing,"
Yuan said.

"And their experiences on hosting the Olympic Games are valuable for us," he added.

AOC president John Coates echoed Yuan's view.

"Our teams will train together... And our coaches, trainers, judges, officials, experts and scientists
will attend seminars and courses and exchange ideas beneficial to both countries," he said.

"We will take benefits from the cooperation in developing our sport events that are not strong such as
badminton," he said. "We have six training exchange programs next year and hope they can help our
performance in badminton."

According to the Agreement, the 2008 Olympics host city of Beijing will be encouraged to invite
Australian athletes participate in the Olympic test events planned for 2007-2008 while Australia
will provide advice to the COC on its experience as host NOC for the Sydney Olympic Games. Both will
invite each other to take part in the national and international competitions being held in respective
countries.
