Now that's an Iron Man
Sun, 14 Nov 2004 16:28:58 -0500
Cannondale Rewards Unusually Determined Ironman KONA, Hawaii -- After a full year of training for the 2004 Ironman, Christian Sadowski had his bike and nearly his body crushed by a motorcycle 105 miles into the Ironman World Championships. His hopes, however, remained unscathed. The former Army Sergeant got up, brushed himself off, and ran the remaining 7 miles of the bike leg--in socks, with his mangled bike slung over his shoulder. Without water or shoes, Sadowski made it to the transition area one minute before the time cutoff. All he had to do after that was run a mere 26.2-mile marathon. Sadowski wrapped his raw and blistered feet, and set off. Earlier in the week he had overheard comments about Kona lottery winners--which he was--are not real Triathletes and shouldn't be allowed to compete with the elite and pro athletes. Sadowski made it to the finish line in 16 hours 9 minutes and 48 seconds. Cannondale Bicycles, official bike sponsor of the Kona Ironman, although previously unaffiliated with Sadowski, presented him with the Ironman "Dedication" Award and a new Ironman 2000 bike at the closing ceremonies. Critical Mass on a Roll in Chile
Sun, 14 Nov 2004 16:15:58 -0500
400 Cyclists take to the Streets Santiago, Chile -- On the first Tuesday evening of every month, a cacophony of whistles, chants and bicycle bells competes with the noise of rush-hour traffic as the Furiosos Ciclistas snake through the downtown of Chile's capital city. The 400-odd "Raging Cyclists" -- a hodgepodge of naturalists, environmental activists and cycling aficionados -- are patterned after Critical Mass, the Bay Area group that has sent bicyclists riding through downtown San Francisco on the last Friday of the month since 1992. Like their California counterparts, Chile's Raging Cyclists put their passion on two wheels to promote nonpolluting transportation in this smoggy, congested South American city of 6 million. "Everyone comes for a different reason," said Jesus Montealegre, who wears a reflective first-aid outfit to identify himself as one of the group's paramedics. "But we all come to promote the safe use of the bicycle and all of its advantages. It's healthy, economical. It reduces traffic and air pollution, and when you ride a bike, you get to relate to others on the road better and get to know people." Raging Cyclists was founded in 1996. When Montealegre first joined four years ago, he says they were lucky to get 50 riders on the monthly jaunt. There are now more than 3,000 participants, though the group has no formal head and has grown largely through word-of-mouth and the Internet. Similar groups have sprung up in more than 200 U.S. and Canadian cities as well as in Europe, Australia, Asia and South America. In Chile, the club's popularity has contributed to an upsurge in cycling -- 5 percent of Santiago residents now use a bicycle as their primary means of transportation -- a rate that has doubled in the past decade, according to the ministry of transportation. "Cyclists used to be seen as blue-collar workers who would take their bike to save bus fare," Montealegre said. "But today, you see executives, government workers, lawyers, students, everyone riding. This is changing the way cycling is seen, from being a lower-class necessity to a classless means of transportation and recreation." Guillermo Diaz, subsecretary for transportation with the Ministry of Public Works, has been pushing the national government to support this kind of green transportation. "Santiago has a population of 6 million people, of which more than a million have their own car -- an incredibly high rate that's bringing this city to a standstill," said Diaz, an avid cyclist. "If we can convince more people to go to the supermarket or drop their kids off at school on a bike instead of a car, we'll help create better health conditions, a better quality of life and less contamination." Santiago, which sits in a valley surrounded by two mountain ranges, is one of the most polluted cities in the world. Residents are frequently subjected to air-quality alerts and pollution emergencies. Respiratory diseases are common. On their monthly rides, the Raging Cyclists chant demands for "ciclovias" or "bike paths" as they pass the presidential palace and government offices. And they're getting what they want. There is already a 2.8-mile path in the works to run along the Alameda, Santiago's main drag. It's a huge victory given its $500,000 price tag, a significant sum even for this prosperous South American country. The World Bank's Global Environment Fund has donated $7 million to Chile to encourage the use of public transit and nonmotorized transportation by expanding the Alameda bike path to neighboring municipalities and outlying communities. The nearby coastal port of Valparaiso will also get new bike paths. And there's a $1 million plan to build 6 miles of bike paths in the southern city of Concepcion, which will be integrated with the train system and other means of public transit. Diaz, of the public works ministry, credits the persistence of the Raging Cyclists for these successes. "I have the best opinion of them," he said. "They have made an important effort to force this issue into a political and public arena." The Raging Cyclists also have a socially conscious side -- working to promote cycling in poor communities, where they donate bicycles and give lessons in how to maintain them properly. "I've always been attracted to groups that fight for change, like Greenpeace and that sort of thing," said 23-year-old Iris Lopez, a new member who bicycles four hours a day. "But this group was much easier to access because there's no hierarchy to it, so there's no discrimination. We're all equal participants. And that's why we're making waves." Whither the Pro Tour?
Sun, 14 Nov 2004 14:15:58 -0500
With Amaury Sports Organization (ASO), Rizzoli Corriere della Sera (RCS) and Unipublic, organizers respectively of the Tour de France, Giro d'Italia and Vuelta a España, along with numerous other first rate races on the professional cycling calendar, opting out of the new UCI Pro Tour, the events available for the fledgling Pro Tour are somewhat limited. ASO organizes the DOHA International GP, Tour of Qatar, Classique Haribo, Paris-Nice, Critérium International, Paris-Roubaix, Flèche Wallonne and Liège-Bastogne-Liège, Tour de Picardie, Tour du Languedoc-Roussillon and Classique des Alpes. RCS organizes the Giro d'Italia, Milano-San Remo and Giro di Lombardia. Unipublic Organizes la Vuelta a España, Vuelta a Aragón, la Clásica Alcobendas-Collado Villalba, la Vuelta a la Comunidad Valenciana, la Vuelta a Murcia, la Semana Catalana, el Trofeo Luis Puig and la Escalada a Montjuic. That doesn't leave very much. And the question is already being asked: How long will it be before the three main organizers launch their own Pro Tour? The current Pro Tour Events Tour des Flandres (Belgique) Tour du Pays Basque (Espagne) Gand-Wevelgem (Belgique) Amstel Gold Race (Pays-Bas) Tour de Romandie (Suisse) Tour de Catalogne (Espagne) Critérium du Dauphiné libéré (France) Tour de Suisse Contre-la-montre par équipes à Eindhoven (Pays-Bas) HEW-Cyclassics à Hambourg (Allemagne) Tour du Benelux Clasica San Sebastian (Espagne) Tour d'Allemagne GP Ouest-France à Plouay (France) Tour de Pologne Championnat de Zurich (Suisse) (Source: SixDay Staff)
Famous Attorney faces hopeless Suit
Sun, 14 Nov 2004 07:15:58 -0500
But Portland attorney Ray Thomas presses Wrongful Death Suit anyway By : Ashbel S. Green Portland attorney Ray Thomas has won some big verdicts in his career, most notably an $80 million judgment against tobacco manufacturer Philip Morris in 1999. But Thomas expects to collect nothing from his latest lawsuit -- a wrongful death complaint against an indigent drunken driver who ran over and killed two bicyclists and severely injured another in 2003. "I told the family we'll do what can we do. So I'll take his deposition and try to get some kind of a judgment against him," said Thomas, an avid bicyclist and author of a book on bicycle law. "Then at least I did something." Thomas filed suit earlier this week against Lindsey Lyle Llaneza, a 50-year-old alcoholic who is serving a 20- year prison sentence in connection with the deaths of Angela Leazenby, 26, and Orion Satushek, 27, and the injuring of Caroline Buchalter. Llaneza, who pleaded guilty to various felony charges earlier this year, ran over Leazenby, Satushek and Buchalter while they were on a midnight summer bike ride in Southeast Portland. When police stopped Llaneza, his blood-alcohol level was nearly three times the legal limit. When Llaneza's van struck the bicyclists, it was traveling 60 to 70 mph, according to estimates, at least twice the posted limit. Llaneza hadn't had a valid Oregon driver's license in nearly 17 years but had continued to drive despite repeated traffic infractions and a DUII citation three months before. Thomas, who has represented dozens of injured bicyclists, filed the suit on behalf of Kenneth Franken, Leazenby's stepfather. The suit seeks $7,454.41 for medical, burial and memorial services plus an unspecified amount of non-economic damages. Thomas, who only gets paid if he collects money for his clients, does not expect to earn a dime for his work. Still, he said, he intends to drive out to Eastern Oregon Correctional Institution in Pendleton, where Llaneza is being held, and interview him under oath. "I sure do want to hear what he has to say about what the heck happened. Because it's just terrible what happened to those kids," Thomas said. "I hope this case also reminds people in cars that you've got to be careful. One little negligent mistake where you're not hitting someone who's encased in sheet metal and you can really damage someone." (Source: The Oregonian)

Saving his Olympic Medal and assuring a Tour de France start in 2005
may prove a lost cause for this Phonak rider...
By JULIET MACUR From the living room of his Colorado dream house, Tyler Hamilton sees miles of rolling hills covered with evergreens. In the distance, snow-capped mountains form the Continental Divide. The sky is muted orange, promising another magnificent sunset. Behind him, around the neck of a grinning carved wood moose, hangs the Olympic gold medal he won in the cycling time trial at the Athens Games. On the walls are photographs of his golden retriever, Tugboat, who died in July and whose tag Hamilton wore inside his helmet on that winning ride. Next to the couch, a wood box holds Tugboat's ashes, a long lock of his pale tail curling around the lid. Cycling jerseys stitched for the Swiss team built for Hamilton to win the Tour de France sit neatly stacked in the laundry room. Nine custom bicycles line the walls of his garage. When he turns away from the windows, he frowns. "This is the lowest point of my whole life," he says. "I could lose all of this." Hamilton, the American considered the heir apparent to Lance Armstrong, learned in September that he had tested positive for endurance-boosting blood transfusions at the Olympics and at the Vuelta a España. At 33, just as he seemed ready to claim center stage, Hamilton is facing a two-year suspension from competition. His lawyers expect the United States Anti-Doping Agency, which has jurisdiction over the case, to make a formal charge against him soon, and they anticipate going to arbitration in January. Hamilton's goal of winning the 2005 Tour de France is slipping away. He stands a good chance of missing the Tour, a race Armstrong has won six consecutive times but is expected to skip. Anti-doping experts involved in the case say Hamilton is guilty, and Olympic officials are not convinced of his innocence. That keeps Hamilton and his wife, Haven, awake at night. They read arcane scientific data on blood doping to learn what they will be up against when he presents his case. If he loses, he plans to go to the Court of Arbitration for Sport, the highest court of international athletics. He has a lot at stake. His Swiss team, Phonak, pays him a high-six-figure salary. He also has endorsement deals with companies like Nike, Clif Bar and Oakley, putting his yearly income well above $1 million. Now sponsors are wary. Some fellow competitors are retreating. And recently, a World Anti-Doping Agency spokesman said Hamilton had kept his Olympic medal only because of a laboratory error. "After the Olympics, my life was really secure, my career was really on track because the gold medal can bring you a lot, you know?" Hamilton says. "Now my life is on hold." Hamilton, a sliver of a man at 5 feet 8 inches and 130 pounds, makes eye contact as he says: "I would be happier without everything I have, with nothing, if I could just clear my name. If I had to, I'd give up everything, down to my last penny, to have my name back." A Test Failed Hamilton, the first American to win a road racing Olympic gold in 20 years, left Athens in late August and headed for the Vuelta a España. On Sept. 11, he won an individual time trial. Five nights later, he rose from a massage table to be met by Alvaro Pino, the director of his Phonak team. "You've been accused of transfusing blood from a different person," in the Vuelta, Hamilton said Pino told him. Homologous blood doping, the practice of transfusing another person's blood to increase the amount of oxygen-carrying red blood cells, has been against the rules in cycling since the late 1980's. It improves athletes' endurance but can spread disease and even cause death. Hamilton, the first athlete with a positive result since the test's introduction this year, said he was stunned. His requests for additional screening and a DNA test were denied. "This can't be right," he said he told Pino. "Stay calm. We'll work this out, don't worry." Hamilton dropped out of the Vuelta that day and headed to his condominium in Girona, Spain. Haven, his wife, was in Massachusetts with her family. Tugboat was gone. He opened the door to an empty, painful feeling. (Source: New York Times)
