Phonak : Fighting for its Life
Sun Nov 21 15:01:13 2004

Final Pro Tour decision tomorrow likely

Switzerland's only professional cycling team, Phonak, say they will be fighting for their existence on
Monday as they appeal to the International Cycling Union (UCI) for the reinstatement of their racing
licence.

HAMILTON : Devastated by doping charge

Phonak were told last week that their licence request for next season's Pro Tour had been provisionally
rejected by the UCI's license commission, following three positive doping tests in the past four months.

The Swiss team are contesting the validity of the two tests regarding American Olympic time trial champion
Tyler Hamilton and Spain's Santiago Perez, both of whom failed a newly-introduced test for blood doping.

"The licence commission's initial decision to withhold our licence is not specifically to do with the cases
of Hamilton and Perez, but it is true that the UCI is seeking further information about our anti-doping
policy," Phonak team manager Urs Freuler told Reuters.

"We will be looking to assure the commission that our anti-doping measures are just as strong as the other
teams on the Pro Tour, and we are optimistic that our licence request will be approved."

EXISTENTIAL SIGNIFICANCE

Freuler and team owner Andi Rihs told Reuters they would not speculate on what would happen if the commission
stuck to its position.

However, a media release posted on Phonak's website last week said that participation on next year's Pro Tour
was "of existential significance to the team's future and vitally important to Swiss cycling in general".

Since the withdrawal of the Swiss Post team from professional cycling in 2001, Phonak have been Switzerland's
sole representatives in the sport's upper echelons.

As well as acquiring big international names such as Hamilton and Perez, the team have also served as a
nurturing ground for new Swiss talent.

"Phonak has been very important for our country's young riders because it has given them vision and a hope
for their professional futures," Swiss cycling association president Fraenk Hofer told Reuters.

"As well as attracting successful international riders, teams want to promote youngsters from their own
countries because that is obviously of interest to their sponsors and their fans.

"If Phonak was to lose its licence it would be a huge loss for Swiss cycling because many of those young
riders would struggle to find contracts elsewhere."

Phonak's fate may be announced immediately after Monday's meeting, but the licence commission could also
postpone its decision until December 2 when it is due to present its final list of Pro Tour teams
