Stuart O'Grady, 31, Road Cyclist of the year

SYDNEY: Athens Olympic sprint and keirin gold medallist Ryan Bayley was Friday named Australian cyclist
of the year at an awards ceremony here. The 22-year-old West Australian had an outstanding 2004, winning
gold in the sprint and keirin in Athens and taking a bronze medal in the sprint at the world championships
in Melbourne in May. Bayley's recognition comes in an unprecedented year of success for Australian cycling
with six Olympic gold medals, ten Paralympic gold medals and 19 world titles.

Bayley qualified fastest for the sprint and won both the qualifying and first round of the keirin at the
Athens Olympics. In the finals of both events he displayed sensational acceleration as he raced to double
gold.

Stuart O'Grady, 31, who won a stage of the Tour de France and became the first Australian man to win a round
of the prestigious World Cup Series when he sprinted to victory in Hamburg, was named the road cyclist of
the year award.

Anna Meares won the female track cyclist of the year. She became the first woman to ride under 34 seconds for
the 500m time trial when she smashed the world record to win gold in Athens.

Dutch and Japanese development riders targetted

Team Shimano-Van Keulen-Imabo Van Buren - rolls off the tongue, doesn't it? - is made up of Dutch and
Japanese riders. The team will be equipped with Colnago frames.

"For the first time in history, Shimano will be the main sponsor of a professional road racing team,"
said Harald Troost, Shimano Europa's PR manager.

"One of Shimano's main goals for the next few years is to support the Japanese road cycling environment.

Philippine Olympic Committee to build new Stadium
Sat Nov 27 09:32:36 2004 -0500

Abandoned US Clark Air Base a possible site.

A new 10,000-seat stadium worthy of the Filipino athlete will be the cornerstone of Jose Cojuangco's term
as Philippine Olympic Committee president. If plans don't miscarry, construction will probably start as
early as next year.

Cojuangco made the promise yesterday after being elected president of the country's most powerful sports
body, replacing Celso Dayrit who surprised observers by bowing out of the race that set the stage for the
first ascension of a candidate to the top POC post without opposition.

"This is not a victory for myself, but a victory for sports," said Cojuango shortly after he was
proclaimed winner.

Though he ran unopposed, the election committee headed by former POC president Rene Cruz,a retired general,
still asked the delegates to cast their votes.

Of the 38 present, 30 cast their ballots for Cojuangco while the others abstained.

Cojuangco's ticket also won the other positions, sweeping aside the token resistance from three pro-Dayrit
candidates who were soundly beaten.

Joining Cojuangco in the winners' circle were taekwondo's Robert Aventajado (chairman) weightlifting's
Monico Puentevella (first vice-president), judo's Rey Jaylo (second VP), wushu's Julian Camacho (treasurer)
and sepak takraw's Mario Tanchangco (auditor).

Elected to the board were badminton's Edgardo Aglipay, softball's Harry Angping, table tennis' Vic Valbuena
and penkak silat's Sultan Jamalul Kiram II.

Cycling's Bert Lina was appointed secretary general but he declined the post saying he would be too busy
to serve in that position.

Among Cojuangco's well-wishers was his daughter Mikee, whose gold medal victory in equestrian in the Busan
Asian games, catapulted her to national fame.

"His wealth in experience gives him the knowledge of what to do in his desire to regain our past glory
in international arenas," said Mikee who is married to Dodot Jaworski, a Pasig congressman and son of
the basketball legend.

Said Cojuangco. "There was no manipulation in this exercise and there were many
who set aside personal interests so we all get united for the betterment of Philippine sports."

Cojuangco stressed that the operations of the POC will not be a "one-man show."

"Every member will be given an assignments to which they will be responsible for, especially in the coming
year when we host the Southeast Asian Games," he ssaid. "Of course we will be eyeing the overall championship.
But the SEA Games is more than winning medals. It is also an opportunity for us to show what the Filipino
is made of. "

As for the stadium. Cojuangco said a Canada-based firm has expressed interest regarding the project.

"Now that I am already in this position, I will start talking seriously with this group."

"My idea is to build a stadium outside of the city," he said mentioning Clark Air Base as probable site.

"One problem with the Clark site is the reported existence of toxic waste left there by the Americans.
Anyway, we will look for the most suitable site," he said.

When asked about his earlier statement concerning the sale of the ancient Rizal Memorial Sports Complex,
Cojuangco reiterated that the 70-year-old complex can no longer meet the demands of the athletes.

"It is no longer sufficient and it is crowded and polluted. I don't think we can do much with Rizal.
We can no longer improve this," Cojuangco said.

Dayrit, who began his term in 1999 and which will end on Dec. 31, declined to make any comments about the
outcome of the elections and instead requested that all questions be directed to Cojuangco.
